This report contains the results of the work within task T1.1, workpackage WP1 of the RFieldbus project. The main objective of the task was to investigate the requirements for a radio fieldbus in manufacturing automation and process control applications in terms of real-time and dependable aspects, mobility and wireless access. Big efforts were made to investigate the requirements by collecting user opinions. As a summary of the registered user needs 18 requirements were defined. In order to get more detailed requirements for the radio interface the propagation path characteristics (at 1,3 and 2,45 GHz) in different industrial sites were investigated . It was found, that a maximum path loss of about 100 db and a maximum delay spread of about 220 ns can be expected at a maximum distance between transmitter and receiver not greater than 80 m. This meets most industrial requirements. Larger areas can be covered by using several radio cells. In addition a simple real-time model of fieldbus networks was created and illustrated by some numerical examples. Furthermore dependability attributes were defined. The methodology to quantify the data integrity described by IEC 870 was used to estimate the target physical layer bit error rate of the RFieldbus. Assuming that mobile devices will take a specific benefit from the RFieldbus several mobile industrial applications and suitable application scenarios are described in this document, including their associated requirements. Considering that multimedia is a fact in today's information environments some standard and prospec-tive industrial network multimedia applications are described with their requirements. Finally the specific requirements of the two planned field trials are generally described and the benefits expected from the users by the introduction of the RFieldbus are summarised.
