Factory Automation
Factory Automation
With the Industry 4.0 initiative, modern manufacturing systems have a growing number of ICT requirements such as the capability for easy customization of products, highly flexible production and logistics, self-diagonosis ann maintenance, self-optimization and self-configuration of production lines, and intelligent support for human operators. We focus our research on the real-time embedded computational and communication aspects of such smart manufacturing requirements, with particular emphasis on connectivity architectures, data aggregation and fusion, integration of legacy systems, smart energy grids, service-oriented platforms, and work on cutting-edge verification & validation approaches based on standards. Most manufacturing systems have real-time and reliability requirements that must be encompassed in the design of the overall system, including the computational (hardware/software/middleware) and communication (wired/wireless) platforms of the distributed embedded system. Aspects such as efficient processor utilization, real-time scheduling and energy-efficient, reliable and timely communication between network nodes have to be carefully considered.
