R-Fieldbus Higher Layer Specification

Ref: HURRAY-TR-0116       Publication Date: 1, Mar, 2001

Abstract:
Several approaches may be followed in order to support Internet protocols for Industrial multimedia over PROFIBUS. Some of these approaches were identified and presented in the v1.0 of the document "General System Architecture of the RFieldbus" D1.3. The present document aims at specifying in detail the way, that the integration of the TCP/IP Stack into the PROFIBUS stack, will take place. The focal point of this integration lies in the development of appropriate layers over the PROFIBUS FDL. These inserted layers will handle special issues related to IP Traffic over PROFIBUS, concerning the Admission Control and Scheduling mechanisms needed to correctly integrate the TCP/IP traffic (supporting multi-media applications) with the PROFIBUS control-related traffic. Such mechanisms must provide the desired Quality of Service for multi-media applications, while guaranteeing that the timing requirements of the control-related traffic are always satisfied. Furthermore, the need to satisfy the different requirements of diverse applications, such as industrial multimedia traffic and industrial control traffic, over diverse physical media, wired or wireless segments, makes it mandatory to off-line generate the appropriate scheduling parameters, compelling the adequate on-line behaviour of the Admission Control and Scheduling mechanisms.
