Miguel Gutiérrez Gaitán successfully defended his PhD dissertation on Real-time Overwater Wireless Networks

9, Feb, 2023

On February 6, 2023, Miguel Gutiérrez Gaitán successfully defended his PhD thesis supervised by Luis Almeida, and co-supervised by Pedro Santos and Pedro d'Orey, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal.

His thesis entitled "Real-Time Overwater Wireless Network Design" offers novel, various, and effective cross-layer insights and methods aiming to improve the wireless communication performance of real-time overwater wireless networked systems - by design -. Notably, this work put forward novel techniques for overwater link design and link-quality prediction able to mitigate/anticipate changes due to tides using commodity technologies (e.g. LoRa, WiFi), as well as novel gateway designation methods based on the social sciences concept of centrality, and a novel routing scheme that minimizes path overlaps among flows.

The PhD examination committee was composed of Thomas Watteyne, Research Director at INRIA in Paris, France; Svetlana Girs, Senior Lecturer at the Mälardalen University in Västeras, Sweden; and Rui Campos, Assistant Professor at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. It was chaired by Jaime Cardoso, Full Professor of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
