CISTER consolidates collaborative research with top European researchers in Cooperating Objects


CISTER/INESC-TEC researcher Mário Alves participated in the FP7 European Network of Excellence in Cooperating Objects (CONET) WP4 meeting in Duisburg, Germany, on the 27/SEP/2012. The objective of this meeting was to enable interactions and make a status update of the research clusters that have been active within CONET, planning the strategy for the final review meeting (expected to happen in January 2013).


Mário led the meeting of the COTS4QoS (on using COTS technologies for achieving QoS in low-power wireless networks) research cluster and also participated in the meeting of the RMA (on radio resource management and adaptation) research cluster, where CISTER is actively involved. At the plenary, Mário presented the COTS4QoS research cluster, with a special focus on the most recent results (Y4) and on a wrap up of the most important outcomes of 4 years of research. The COTS4QoS research cluster produced excellent R&D results, namely a number of scientific publications in top conferences and journals, as a corollary of the synergies created among partners (ISEP (leader), NUIGalway, SICS, TUBerlin, UCLondon, UNIPisa, TCDublin) and a set of planning/engineering tools that widely used by the international community. This cluster also produced relevant standardization, outreach and exploitation results.


The CONET Network of Excellence addresses the research and technological effort that will ultimately efficiently allow interlinking the real world physical objects and cyberspace, generally coined as “Cooperating-Objects” or “Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)”. CONET includes 16 core members, 11 from academia and 5 from industry.  Academic members include ISEP, TU Delft (NL), TU Berlin (D), ETHZ (CH), UCL (UK), SICS (S) and University of Pisa (I). Industrial members are SAP (D), Schneider-Electric GmbH (D), SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems Ltd. (UK), Boeing Research & Technology Europe (E) and Telecom Italia (I). Within CONET, CISTER-ISEP is leader of WP5 (Spreading of Excellence) and also of 2 out of 6 research projects (clusters COTS4QoS and SDP). 


CISTER Researchers make an impression at EMSOFT 2012


Five CISTER researchers travelled to Tampere, Finland to attend the Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK) 2012. The flagship event of ESWEEK is the ACM International Conference on Embedded Software (EMSOFT) 2012, which is also is one of the major conferences in the embedded systems area. Overall CISTER contributed 2 regular paper presentations at EMSOFT covering a good part of the EMSOFT program of 23 papers. Further Benny Akesson gave one invited talk  summarizing the work on Memory Controllers for Real-Time Embedded Systems at the affiliated workshop on Memory Architecture and Optimisation.


As a highlight, CISTER researcher Stefan M. Petters presented an invited talk at EMSOFT 2012. In this talk, Stefan presented two parts of the working program of the TACLe COST action, one of which he also acts as a working group leader and country representative for Portugal. The first part of his talk was devoted to the work in the area of the working group he is leading, as well as outlining the issues which are slated to be tackled in the working group. In the second part, he drew on results of the RECOMP Artemis and RePoMuC FCT projects and discussed both, fundamental challenges pertaining to timing analysis of multi- and many-core architectures beyond those existing already for unicore processors, as well as results developed in CISTER on solving some of these issues. The talk was exceptionally well attended and well received. 


CISTER Researchers win Outstanding Paper Award


CISTER/INESC-TEC researchers Gurulingesh Raravi, Konstantinos Bletsas and Vincent Nelis (in collaboration with Björn Andersson from the Software Engineering Institute CarnegieMellon, USA) received one of the four "Outstanding Paper Award" at the 24th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS) for their paper entitled "Task Assignment Algorithms for Two-type Heterogeneous Multiprocessors"


The Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems is the premier European conference and one of the top conferences in the world in the area of real-time and embedded computing systems. Traditionally, only very targeted and mostly high-quality submissions compete for making it to the conference. In this 24th edition, a total of 111 submissions were received. The reviewing process involved 39 program committee members assisted by 119 secondary reviewers, producing at least 3 reviews per paper. From these 111, 34 papers were selected for publication/presentation (full paper acceptance ratio of 30%), from which 4 were recognized as “outstanding papers” (3,6% of the submitted papers). 


CISTER Researcher Leads Flagship Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2013)


CISTER researcher Stefan M. Petters has been awarded as the leadership of the 25th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS'13), as Technical Program Committee Chairman of this conference. This is an outstanding recognition both for Stefan and the CISTER research unit as a whole and is a testament to the excellent work performed in the unit. ECRTS is one of the three flagship events in embedded and real-time computing systems area and serving as a forum of state-of-the-art research and development.


ECRTS will take place from 9th to 12th of July 2013 in Paris, France and will host, besides the conference a set of highly popular targeted Workshops on operating Systems Platforms, Worst-Case Execution Time, Real-Time Networks, and Open Problems in real-time Scheduling, as well as a work-in-progress session for work in early stages of development. The PC meeting will take place in March 2013 and will bring a set of well renown researchers of the international stage to our City of Porto.


The 23rd edition in 2011 was hosted by CISTER in Porto (http://www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/ecrts11/) and was widely lauded as the best ECRTS in its history and has drawn a new record for ECRTS of over 170 participants to the conference and its associated workshops.


Overall, this news marks a truly remarkable year 2013 for the CISTER research unit, as two of the flagship events in real-time systems computing receive their scientific leadership from CISTER. The second conference to do so is the 19th IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Applications Symposium (RTAS 2013,http://www.rtas.org/), for which  Eduardo Tovar is the Program Chair. Being the headline event of CPSweek (http://www.cpsweek.org) in Philadelphia, USA, RTAS 2013 will take place in early April 2013.


SENODS Major Milestone


The SENODS project was motivated by a major overhaul of the datacenter facilities of Portuguese corporation Portugal Telecom (PT), with the construction of a very large and state-of-the-art datacenter in Covilhã, to begin operation late 2012/early 2013.


With the goal of integrating of the technology developed within SENODS in PT’s datacenter facilities, CISTER finished the implementation of a new demonstrator of these solutions. The demonstrator was validated (last October 18) by high-level PT representatives, which responsible for the datacenter facilities of the company. This represents a major milestone of the project and means that a large scale sensing network, supervisory software and middleware developed at CISTER is on its way to be part of the new high-tech Data Centre of PT.

The SENODs project (Sustainable ENergy-Optimized Datacenters) is developing integrated solutions to address both the cyber and physical challenges posed by the energy consumption, cooling, and operational needs of large-scale datacenters. The project consortium is lead in Portugal by CISTER-ISEP and in the USA by the Carnegie-Mellon University, and the other academic partner is FEUP in Portugal. The project is industrially driven by major Portuguese corporation Portugal Telecom (PT). 


Project Manager Gareth Clement joins CISTER


The CISTER research unit is further implementing its strategic development plan with the addition of a project manager.


Gareth Clement completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Teesside in the UK (1996). While working in Operations Management in the UK he decided to further his education and studied for his MBA at Thames Valley University (now University of West London) in 2005. After completing his studies he was invited to lecture by the Business Management School at the University. Gareth went on to complete his Project Management Professional Qualification from the Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) and after further lecturing in the UK this led to a job offer in Portugal as a Senior Project Management Consultant. In 2009 Gareth was invited to join Critical Software being responsible for the I&K (Innovation & Knowledge) dept focusing on the R&D for the organisation alongside being the Project Manager on some of the research projects. The most notable project was the EMMON project (an ARTEMIS/ FP7 project from the European Union) and this was worked with 9 project partners, CISTER being one of the project partners.
